Day 13 – Favorite doujinshi

Ok, I wanted to mention these titles and artists in earlier posts, but thank god for day 13! 😀

True, I have not read many doujinshi (aside from some TnC ones sometime after I read a good part of the VN ^^”), but a while back I came across a series that I knew from the start that I’d definitely enjoy. Long reminiscing aside, the series I’m talking about is In these words, written by Kichiku Neko and illustrated by TogaQ.

Yes, it’s got beautifully drawn manly men doing things that are definitely 18+, but it also has a really good police/mystery sort of story going on. I don’t want to get into the specifics for fear of giving spoilers, but ITW definitely leaves you wondering about what the heck is really going on in the long run. Add to that a cast of genuinely likeable and intriguing characters and the author’s great sense of humour and you’ve got yourself one heck of a hidden gem of the BL universe  (~ ̄▽ ̄)~. Oh and don’t even get me started on the prequel series and side stories and whatnot.

All in all, ITW doesn’t even really register as a doujinshi, but rather a less well known proper manga series due to its professionalism and overall high quality.

As always, thanks for stopping by! 🙂

Day 10 – List the BL you own

With the idea that ‘a picture is worth 1000 words’ in mind, here are all the BL manga I own 😀 –

yes, Totoro is observing you from the background ^^

So, on one hand I have the In these Words series (volumes 1 and 2 in English and Japanese) and it’s prequels New York Minute, First, do no Harm, One of these Nights, Maybe Someday and the Undertow booklet. I’ve also recently purchased chapter 1 of ITW but I forgot to stick in here with the rest of the books ^^”. Next, we’ve got the Sakura Gari series in Japanese (interestingly enough, this hardcover version also has furigana), Chou ni naru hi (チョウになる日), volume 1 of Sekai-Ichi Hatsukoi (世界一初恋), volume 1 of Hana wa saku ka (花は咲くか), NightS and Kimi ni ageru (きみにあげる). I’ve also got a few of the No.6 volumes, but that series doesn’t technically qualify as BL I guess.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to expand the collection over time :D:D.

Alas, that’s it for today. As always, thanks for stopping by! 🙂

Day 5 – Favorite seme

Ok, my first thought here is ‘do I include potential semes from OTPs and whatnot? Oo’, in which case I’ll end up relisting a good number of characters from my list of favourite male anime characters xD. So in order to avoid that (and because I prefer to go with actual pairs) I’m gonna stick to characters from yaoi stories and all that jazz :D.

Potentially confusing drama aside, here comes another list (in no particular order) :D:D.

Clear (クリア) from DRAMAtical Murder

615346

I’ve not seen the anime adaptation of DMMd yet (yes, feel free to shoot me), so the following is based solely on what I know from the VN. Clear’s just so goofy and considerate and adorable that you can’t not love him! 🙂 And while in some cases I just wanna smack certain characters during their bad endings, I really can’t say that was the case with him. If anything, the bad endings (the original and the continuation from re:connect) kind of made me appreciate him even more. So either I’m a twisted little puppy or this character’s just really well written and just generally awesome xD.

David Krause from In these words

I’ve mentioned before that I generally don’t really like the ‘older guy’ type but every rule has to have an exception and by god, I’m pretty sure David’s my exception xD. I haven’t read all the stories he’s in yet, however the manga I did read left me wanting more :D:D. David’s badass and straightforward, but also spontaneous and gentle and kind at the same time and he’s got one hell of a sense of humour. In a nutshell – he’s one of those awesomely awesome characters, imho ^^.

Shinohara Kenji ( 篠原憲司) from In these words

In.These.Words.651107

My first encounter with this character was through his back story (i.e., Maybe Someday) that’s part of the prequel series to In these words and I must admit I pretty much immediately took a liking to Shinohara. Once I got my hands on the first 2 volumes of ITW proper and found out more about him and who’s who and what’s what all I could do was love him more, twisted and dorky as he can be sometimes xD.

So I’m pretty sure that’s it for this post. As always, thanks for stopping by! 🙂

On ‘New York Minute’ (prequel to ‘In these Words’)

N.B.: this post was first published here, before I made a blog here on wordpress.

So these thingies came through the mail yesterday 😀

20150131_132231

I know I’m still not finished with the by-now-way-more-than-30-day anime challenge, but I wanted to make a post about the works of Guilt|Pleasure for a while now, so here goes :D.

Mind you, I haven’t read In these words yet, as I’m waiting for volumes 1 and 2 to be (re-/)published. In the meantime, I did however order them in Japanese because of reasons xD. Aaaaaaanyways, what I mean to say is that the following is written with minimal to no knowledge about the events that unfold in the main series.

New York Minute

I have to say, this volume might just have one of the most beautiful covers I’ve ever seen. I knew TogaQ’s got boatloads of talent, but I’m still in awe at how beautifully the charatcters’ expressions are rendered. And ever since I read this story its atmosphere really stuck with me, so now there’s a ‘heavy winter in New York’ kinda vibe in my heart :D:D. Fuzziness aside, I think it’s safe to say that New York Minute’s about the day that Asano Katsuya and David Krause get together. Katsuya’s the police department’s newly employed psychiatrist and David’s a homicide detective.

The manga part of this volume is beautifully drawn and leaves you wanting more (and when I say that I’m not complaining about the lack of explicit content; rather, the story left me with a nostalgic feeling and it would’ve been nice to see more of Katsuya and David in this ‘winter wonderland’ setting ^^). Lucky for us though, the manga’s swiftly followed by Prey, a short story looking at Katsuya’s very first days at the precinct and how he and David actually meet.

While I really liked the volume’s first part, it also left me a bit disappointed so I was immensely grateful for the inclusion of Prey. Yes, I probably got ahead of myself here, but right after finishing the manga chapter I couldn’t help but think – ok, that’s all fine and dandy but where’s my context for all of this?? It’s like I was watching a display of fireworks, but getting to see only the moment when the fireworks go off in the night sky. As in, I was missing all the anticipation and excitement that comes with seeing and hearing the thing soar up in the sky before bursting and making people go all ‘kyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!’ Excuse the cheesiness, but that comparison was the only thing that came to mind when trying to explain my thoughts xD. So Prey comes along and gives more info on the previously seen characters and frames the manga quite nicely. New York Minute was definitely a much more satisfying read after finishing that short story.

As for the main characters themselves – they’re charming! ^^ I knew from what little I’ve read about ITW that Katsuya’s got a troubled past (to say the least?), and the hints dropped here and there throughout the book left me with a handful of questions about him (which will hopefully be answered at some point). While I’m usually not that big a fan of the older character archetype in yaoi stories, David won me over from the start. I liked the fact that he knows who he is and goes with it, he’s strong, he’s got a great sense of humour and there’s a kindness to him that just makes me want to give him a big hug xD. That being said, I can’t help but be a little scared for him.

In the main series, Katsuya’s (kind of?) paired with Shinohara, so where does that leave David? Will he be reintroduced there at some point? Does he die? Oo Or maybe I’m overlooking stuff ‘cause I haven’t read the main series yet, in which case I’m even more anxious to get my hands on it xD.

I’ll shush for now, but this is to be continued with me rambling about the other volumes from the ITW prequel series ^^.

As always, thanks for stopping by! 🙂
